A few eyebrows were raised when Liverpool decided to spend £45 million on Diogo Jota this summer.

The Portuguese had impressed for Wolves in the three previous seasons but didn’t exactly set the world alight with 33 goals in 111 appearances - 17 of which came in the Championship.

But it's fair to say the 23-year-old has hit the ground running since moving to Anfield.

Expected to be back-up to the front-three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Jota has forced his way into the reckoning with seven goals in 10 appearances.

Nobody could have imagined that Jurgen Klopp would be considering dropping Roberto Firmino for a trip to face Manchester City but that’s the case ahead of Sunday’s clash.

That’s because Jota scored an incredible hat-trick on Tuesday against Atalanta to give Klopp something of a selection headache.

Jota provides Liverpool will something that Firmino doesn't. His ability to run in behind the defence and his pace gives the Premier League champions an added dimension.

Jota left Bergamo proudly clutching the match ball with his new teammates leaving notes of congratulations on it for him.

And one particularly message stood out.

According to The Times, Trent Alexander-Arnold wrote: “Congrats, first of many."

Liverpool fans will certainly hope that’s the case.

But will he be starting against City on Sunday?

While it may seem impossible to drop Jota in this kind of form, club legend Jamie Carragher suggests Klopp may revert to type with Firmino this weekend.

“Jota's form warrants a start, you can't argue about that, but I just think the manager will go back to Firmino, the way they've set up before,” Carragher said, per Goal.

“I think Firmino this season, he's not been at his best, there's no doubt. I don't think he was at his best last season. But they've always performed in the big games - Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea. That's when teams play out from the back and that's when Bobby Firmino is a huge part of that press and winning the ball back and almost not letting teams get out of their own half.

“That was certainly the case in those three games I mentioned, those teams really struggled to get through the press of Liverpool.

“I think Jurgen Klopp will know that Man City want to play out from the back and he'll go with his pressing machine. There's no doubt Jota can do this as well, 'he's a pressing monster', that was the description of him from Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp's assistant, so there's no worries about him on that score.

“But I just think for this game and the type of game it will be and the fact that Bobby has played so many games against Man City and Liverpool have had success in those games, I just think he'll go back to that.”
