Aston Villa are one to watch this season.

After securing promotion from the Championship Dean Smith's side endured a tough campaign last time out as they battled to avoid the drop.

It might have taken until the final match of the season, but they ended the season with their heads above water.

This season has been all about kicking on and four wins from six games has shown that Villa are doing exactly that.

A large part of that is down to their business in the transfer market.

Big-money deals to sign Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Bertrand Traore and Ross Barkley on loan really transformed the club as they look to push towards the top half of the table.

But it seems that they're not done yet.

Reports from French publication Actufoot, via Birmingham Live, have claimed that Aston Villa have been given a boost in their pursuit of Mohamed Simakan.

The Strasbourg defender was linked with a move to Villa Park last week with the likes of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon and Marseille also thought to be keen.

Marseille were said to be favourites to move for the £20million-rated talent, however they've now dropped out of the race.

Whether this will pave the way for Villa to make a move in January remains to be seen, but with significant competition on the horizon it seems that they'll have little time for messing around in getting this one done.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be a very exciting one for supporters.

Aston Villa are in a good place right now as they build a team of talented players with a real point to prove.

Valued at £13.5m with Transfermarkt, Mohamed Simakan certainly fits into that category.

At 20 years of age the central defender looks set for a very bright career in the game and the hope for Dean Smith is that they can be the side who help him to fulfil his potential.

But with such strong competition from elsewhere, it could be tricky.
