Arsenal had VAR to thank for not going 1-0 inside 45 seconds against Aston Villa.

The away side thought they had taken the lead when Jack Grealish pulled the ball back for John McGinn. The Scottish midfielder fired the ball into the roof of the net giving Bernd Leno no chance.

However, VAR decided to check the goal as Ross Barkley was adjudged to be offside and obstructing Leno.

It looked like a ridiculously harsh decision.

Leno was never going to save it anyway, surely!?

Both sides went into the match level on 12 points with Villa having played one match fewer. Dean Smith's side won their opening four games - including a 7-2 hammering against Liverpool - but have lost their previous two (a 3-0 loss to Leeds and a 4-3 defeat to Southampton both at Villa Park).

Arsenal would have been going into the game high on confidence after their 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. They also beat Dunkirk 4-1 on Thursday night in the Europa League.

A victory over Villa would lift them up to sixth in the table, level on points with Chelsea in fifth.

If they do grab all three points, they'll have VAR to thank...
