Arsenal fans were delighted when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed a contract extension back in September.

With 56 goals in 92 games since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2018, the striker has been the Gunners' talisman even when they have been faltering overall.

So, on paper, a new deal should have been fantastic news.

However, the goals have dried up since the Gabon international put pen to paper.

None of Mikel Arteta's attacking players have really been firing on all cylinders of late, with the north Londoners scoring just nine goals in their opening eight league games of the season.

Aubameyang's demise is particularly alarming, though.

In the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa, he failed to register a single shot. According to Statman Dave, that's the third game in which he's recorded that statistic this season.

That in itself is poor for a player of Aubameyang's pedigree, but it seems to speak of a wider decline this term.

In the Premier League, he's scored just twice in the 2020/21 campaign - once against newly-promoted Fulham and once, a penalty, against Manchester United. Those figures are in spite of him playing 717 minutes of football.

It gets worse. With the chances he is missing and his current conversion rate, 'The xG Philosophy' have worked out he is on course to score a grand total of - wait for it... - 2.76 goals all season.

Not only is it set to be a poor season on a personal note for Aubameyang, Arsenal are suffering too.

The 1-0 win over United at Old Trafford made it look as though Arteta's men had turned a corner.

Yet they now go into the international break on a run of three league defeats in their last four.

Though they have found respite in the Europa League, they sit 11th in the domestic table and the defeat to Villa at the Emirates was nothing short of a humiliation.

Aubameyang rediscovering his form will be key if Arsenal are to get back on track.
