Manchester United blocked Mason Greenwood from England call-up amid attitude concerns

Mason Greenwood in action for Man United

Mason Greenwood has the world at his feet.

The youngster burst onto the scene for Man United last season and he has produced some scintillating displays for the club.

He scored 17 goals in 49 games last season in what was a brilliant 19/20 campaign for the Englishman.

However, concerns are growing about the 19-year-old.

Off the field problems and injuries have limited Greenwood to just eight appearances so far this season. He has failed to score in his five Premier League outings for United.

Mason Greenwood and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Greenwood was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for their upcoming games and now worrying details have emerged as to why.

According to the Athletic, Southgate called Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about Greenwood but the Norwegian blocked his player from being called up.

Solskjaer believes it is in Greenwood’s best interests to stay at United.

His decision comes amid concerns that Greenwood is not maximising his potential.

The youngster missed United’s game against Everton on the weekend, with illness being cited as the reason why.

But it is believed he put in a lethargic performance in training on Friday and that put his place in the side at risk.

United are concerned he is not getting enough sleep and that is having an effect on his concentration levels.

Greenwood found himself in trouble earlier this year when he broke lockdown rules to bring girls back to his hotel in Iceland, but his response to the incident has been described as ‘not impressive’.

United expect their young players to show total commitment in training and rest during their time off but Greenwood is not understanding this process at the moment.

The Red Devils are, however, mindful of Greenwood’s age and believe his maturity will increase as he gets older.

United fans are worried about Greenwood after the report.

GIVEMESPORT’S JAMES STROUD SAYS:

It was a very revealing piece produced by the Athletic on Greenwood.

It is of course very worrying. It brings back shades of Ravel Morrison at the club.

Morrison had all the talent in the world but his attitude held him back. He’s now 27 and playing for ADO Den Haag.

I’m not saying the same thing will happen to Greenwood. He’s only 19 years old so he still has time on his side.

But it sounds like he must improve his attitude in order to fulfill his potential.
