Harry Kane has started the 2020/21 campaign like a man possessed.There's just something about second seasons under Jose Mourinho that seem to click and Kane has been crucial in Tottenham Hotspur's promising position in the Premier League table.Spurs have recovered admirably well from their opening day defeat to Everton and would be clear at the top if it wasn't for late goals conceded to Newcastle United and West Ham United.
Tottenham's strong start
But wins over Southampton, Manchester United, Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion mean that only Leicester City are holding Spurs back from top spot.
Their star man, in turn, boasts a remarkable goal-scoring record of 13 strikes from just 14 games already this season and that's not to mention a handsome nine assists to boot.
And their most recent victory, a 1-0 win at the Hawthorns, saw Kane score the deciding goal with a glancing header that elevated him to 150 strikes in his Premier League career.
Praise for Harry Kane
It now means that Kane is 110 strikes away from the long-standing record held by Alan Shearer as the English top flight's record goalscorer since the 1992 rebrand.
Considering Kane is only 27 years old, you'd fancy the Tottenham man's chances of scoring more than Shearer's 260 and if that's the case, then you certainly aren't alone.
That's because Watford striker Troy Deeney opined on talkSPORT that he thinks Kane will 'go on to beat the record' despite not rating his compatriot in his all-time Premier League top five.
Kane tipped to break Shearer's record
"I think, statistically, he will go onto score a lot more goals. I think Harry, injuries permitting, will always score you 20-plus goals a season," Deeney remarked. "Always. He's just that good,"
"He's obviously adding the assists to that now. He's not coming to link it up in like a holding midfielder role, he's getting it with a view to put somebody else in or put them in to be coming onto the ball.
"So, I don't think he's going to be losing goals. He could still score the goal like he did yesterday, which was the deft finish, the header. They're poacher's goals.
"I do think he is going to go on to beat the record [Shearer's 260 goals], but I agree with Andy Cole that he doesn't come into my top five Premier League strikers of all time.
"I don't think you can pick a hole in Harry's game, though. You said that he hasn't got blistering pace; he's not slow. He's a very powerful runner and he's a lot fitter than people give him credit for as well."
Can Kane achieve it?
So, if Kane scores 20 goals a season as Deeney predicts, then it will take him less than six seasons to usurp Shearer's record, which would age the Tottenham man at about 33 years old.
At the rate Kane is going right now, you certainly wouldn't put that past him, assuming he stays in the Premier League and doesn't suffer any long-term injuries.
It would be a huge achievement for Kane to become the record goalscorer in arguably the world's greatest league, especially considering Shearer's record has stood for almost 15 years and he leads Wayne Rooney by 52 strikes.
That's a long way down the road, though, and whether you like to admit the possibility of it or not, we suspect Kane and Mourinho will be focusing on a Premier League title challenge first.
