We saw this every single week but it was yet another VAR dominated Premier League weekend.

Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be VAR drama. And that’s not a good thing.

There were penalty awards for ridiculous handballs but, perhaps the worst VAR call in Premier League history occurred as Patrick Bamford’s goal was disallowed for his stray arm during Crystal Palace vs Leeds.

In what is already a tough time for everyone around the world, we really don’t need VAR ruining the beautiful game.

Which is why we here at GIVEMESPORT imagine life without it.

Every week, we produce a Premier League table based on how it would look without VAR.

After each gameweek, we look at all of the overturned VAR decisions and work out how they’ve affected the match in question. We then use that to update the table accordingly.

Check out previous articles during the 2020/21 season HERE.

So, how does the latest VAR table look after gameweek 8? Let’s take a look:

2nd | Liverpool | Points: 19 | Points difference: +2

Game: Manchester City (A)

Incident: VAR awarded a penalty to Manchester City for Joe Gomez’s handball in the 41st-minute.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): De Bruyne missed the penalty anyway so the VAR call was irrelevant.

3rd | Leicester | Points: 16 | Points difference: -2

Game: Wolves (H)

Incident: Leicester were awarded a 14th-minute penalty for a controversial handball against Max Kilman. Jamie Vardy scored the penalty.

Outcome without VAR (DRAW): Vardy’s penalty was ultimately the only goal of the game. He did later miss another penalty but, without VAR’s interference, we think a draw would have been the most likely result.

8th | Crystal Palace | Points: 12 | Points difference: -1

Game: Leeds (H)

Incident: Perhaps the worst VAR decision all season. Patrick Bamford had a 19th-minute goal disallowed thanks to a ridiculous offside call by VAR.

Outcome without VAR (CRYSTAL PALACE WIN): There’s an argument to be had that if Bamford’s 19th-minute goal had stood, Leeds could have got something out of the game. It would have levelled the scores at 1-1 but, minutes after it was disallowed, Palace made it 2-0. Bamford did pull one back for Leeds but it finished 4-1 to the home side. As it was such a convincing win in the end, we back Palace to have won the match even if Bamford’s equaliser had counted.

Game: Fulham (H)

Incident: Fulham were awarded a 95th-minute by VAR after Saïd Benrahma’s foul on Tom Cairney. The less said about Ademola Lookman’s attempt from the resulting penalty, the better.

Outcome without VAR (WEST HAM WIN): Lookman’s Panenka fail ensured that the VAR decision had no impact on the result.
