Though the potential Derby County takeover is by no means a guarantee of success on the pitch, the idea of wealthy new owners coming into the club is undoubtedly exciting.

Still, it’d be an understatement to say that the start to the campaign has been a disappointment as the Rams lie bottom of the table even in light of Sheffield Wednesday’s points deduction.

Much has been made about Phillip Cocu’s future and, speaking on the Touchline Talk podcast yesterday, noted journalist Peter O’Rourke hinted at a reason as to why the Dutchman is still in charge.

While O’Rourke was simply relaying information he’s heard rather than conclusively saying it was THE reason, he did hint that Cocu’s wages could be a problem when it comes to sacking him.

'From what I'm hearing, he's one of the highest paid managers in the Championship. I think he's on even more money than Frank Lampard was', he said to Dean Jones around 10 minutes and nineteen seconds into the video.

Given the 50-year-old has previously had fairly big jobs in Holland with PSV and Turkey with Fenerbahce, it’s not hard to imagine him demanding a sizeable wage.

There have been reports of Mel Morris delaying his sacking because it would cost up to £4m in compensation. It certainly seems to have been cited as a major reason before but the fact he’s thought to be earning more than Frank Lampard did is interesting.

Derby County latest news

Shelling out after Lampard left for Chelsea suggests the club thought they were getting an upgrade on a man who’d taken them to the play-off final in his first season which in turn speaks to the disastrously bad decision it has been.

Finishing six points off the top six last season and an awful start this time around, Cocu has struggled to convince whatsoever during his spell in charge.

Hopefully for Derby fans, better times are to come.
