Tottenham Hotspur have been in fine form.
Jose Mourinho’s men have been excellent since the opening day defeat to Everton.
Since then, they have won five and drawn two of their seven games, and have been on a three-match winning run, grinding out results against Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion, and West Bromwich Albion.
The results leave them second – they were briefly top after their victory over the Baggies – and just a point off leaders Leicester City.
After the international break comes the acid test, though, as Spurs face a tricky run of fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
Much has been made of the club’s squad depth, and it will be needed over the coming weeks as they look to mount a serious title challenge.
And it appears they are continuing to scour the market for potential future stars as they bid to improve Mourinho’s squad.
Sport Witness carries a report from AS claiming that Spurs have missed out on a move for a 17-year-old Spain U17 international.
Celta Vigo’s David Vilan was also being pursued by Real Madrid but he is instead set to join Atletico Madrid after they fought off the competition of the other two clubs.
Celta are said to view Vilan as a versatile player who can adapt to playing at a higher level, as he even trained with the club’s first-team on various occasions.
Atletico have managed to win the battle, though, and he is likely to link up with their academy set-up before attempting to find his way into Diego Simeone’s plans.
GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…
This is a bit of a shame from Spurs’ perspective but it looks as though they are focusing on the future.
In the summer, they brought in a number of experienced, battle-hardened players, including Gareth Bale, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.
But it seems the focus has shifted and they are also looking to bring in genuine wonderkids who can slot into the academy and develop under their watch.
Missing out on Vilan will be a blow, but this is, overall, a positive step for Spurs.
