There have been some incredible centre-backs in the Premier League era.

Tony Adams was quite brilliant at Arsenal and captained them to two Premier League titles.

United have one of the most fearsome centre-back partnerships the world has ever seen in the shape of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

John Terry would head everything and kick every ball during his time at Chelsea.

And now, despite his long-term injury, Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is making a claim to be regarded as the best centre-back the Premier League has ever seen.

John Terry and Rio Ferdinand

But what does Jamie Carragher think?

The Liverpool legend was not a bad defender himself, having made 508 top-flight appearances for the Reds, as well as representing England on 38 occasions.

And he thinks that Terry was the best of the lot.

“For me he was the best centre back of the Premier League era. He was my type of player. He was basically a better version of me to be honest," Carragher said on talkSPORT.

“I think his football ability is massively underrated. He was a great player.

“He could switch the ball 40/50 yards on his left foot. I always felt it was John Terry who was the defender and Rio Ferdinand was the footballer, but Rio was a much better defender than he was given credit for and I think John Terry was a much better footballer than he was given credit for.”

GIVEMESPORT'S JAMES STROUD SAYS:

It's good to see that Terry is getting some recognition from Carragher.

All the names that I listed above were and are extraordinary players.

Vidic was brilliant and has been previously voted the best centre-back in history.

He was very good, yes, but to me, he wasn't up to the level of Ferdinand and Terry.

I think it's a toss up between them two with regards to who is the best centre-back in history.

Van Dijk is also good, but he has a long way to go if he is to become comparable to the Man United and Chelsea greats.
