Football fans woke up this morning to the news that Manchester United are looking to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Broadcaster Christian Martin dropped the bombshell in the early hours and it follows on from SPORT's report that Juventus are looking to sell the 35-year-old at the end of the season.

Were the Portuguese to complete a return to Old Trafford, it would be one of the biggest transfers in the history of football.

What is more, Ronaldo's potential United comeback for 2021/22 could coincide with Lionel Messi swapping Barcelona for Manchester City at the end of the season when his contract runs out.

While it's still more unlikely than likely, there is a possibility we could see a duel between football's two biggest superstars in a Manchester derby.

Were that to happen, the global interest in meetings between United and City would eclipse pretty much every other sporting spectacle on the planet - apart from maybe a World Cup final.

So with the possibility of a Messi versus Ronaldo 'El Manchico', we here at GIVEMESPORT decided to have a bit of a fun, predicting eight things we believe would happen for what would be domestic football's biggest game.

1. Sky Sports would bombard us with adverts for months before

The broadcaster churn out a hefty number of adverts for the majority of big Premier League games anyway, so imagine how much the volume would increase for 'El Manchico'?!

It would be almost unbearable.

2. Fantasy Premier League players would have a meltdown over which player to captian

Just picture the scene: Messi and Ronaldo both cost £14.0m on FPL and like everyone else on the planet, you've budgeted to have both in your team.

But who the bloody hell do you captain?! You try and abide by the form book, but that always backfires.

In the end, your mate who handed the armband to Jamie Vardy versus Fulham is the one laughing after the Leicester striker scores yet another hat-trick of penalties...

3. Liverpool fans would tweet 'neither Messi or Ronaldo get into our starting XI' before the game

Football Twitter would be absolute carnage in the build-up to the game. United and City fans doing battle, Messi and Ronaldo's legions of worryingly devoted fans taking pop shots at each other, it would be utter chaos.

Then of course you'd have Liverpool fans who, while their team sit top of the table, mock their bitterest rivals prior to the big game.

'Salah > Ronaldo', 'Messi can't press like Jota' - you get the picture.

4. Messi and Ronaldo would shake hands before kick-off and social media would explode

During their days playing against each other in El Clasico, the world went absolutely bonkers when the duo were pictured shaking hands.

That would increase tenfold when the camera panned to the two superstars embracing under the grey skies of Manchester.

Just picture that scene accompanied by a Martin Tyler "and it's live!" - glorious.

5. Neither player would give a toss about defending

Both players are in their 30s now and as we saw in the Champions League last week, they're not exactly willing to waste their energy on defending.

This would in turn anger the ever passionate English fans, as neither player is willing to 'get stuck in' and 'show passion'.

Those cries quickly turns to optimistic cheers when either player gets the ball, though...

6. Ronaldo would get fans on the edge of their seats before skying a free-kick

"Foul by Kyle Walker, this is in Ronaldo's range," Tyler states from the commentary box, accompanied by a trademark "oooooh" from Gary Neville.

The world watches on as City desperately assemble a wall while Ronaldo takes the biggest breath in human history and hoists his shorts up as high as possible.

7. Messi would send Harry Maguire back to Hull City at some point in the match

There's no doubt that we'd get a glimpse of some classic Messi dribbling in a Manchester derby.

Maguire is yet to come face-to-face with the Argentine during his career, but when he does, it has the word 'viral' written all over it.

Jerome Boateng 2.0? You better believe it.

8. Both players would score penalties after dubious VAR handball decisions

With penalties and handballs rife in the Premier League now, it would be inevitable that Messi and Ronaldo would get themselves on the scoresheet from the spot.

The score finishes 1-1, both players embrace for a second time and social media descends into another frenzy.

Each player's loyal fans create 'disasterclass' videos of the other, resulting in Messi and Ronaldo trending on Twitter for an entire fortnight.
