Liverpool, Barcelona, Man Utd: Which club has the best attacking trio this season?
The days of 4-4-2 with little and large strikers upfront are gone.
The most common formation these days features a front three with two speedy wingers and a centre forward.
But who has the best front-three in European football right now?
Well, Spanish outlet Marca have looked at the front-threes around Europe and ranked the best 16 tridents based on goals scored this season.
Let’s take a look at who makes the list:
16. RB Leipzig (Dani Olmo, Yussef Poulsen, Emil Forsberg) – 6 goals
Olmo is actually yet to score this season but Poulsen and Forsberg have scored three each for the German club. They sit second in the Bundesliga table behind Bayern Munich and recently beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
15. Arsenal (Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Willian) – 7 goals
Arsenal are on something of a goal drought in the Premier League having not scored from open play for four matches. Lacazette has bagged three, Aubameyang has four but Willian is yet to open his account.
14. Real Madrid (Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior, Marco Asensio) – 9 goals
Eden Hazard should probably be in this trio but injuries have plagued his Real Madrid career. Benzema has bagged six of the nine goals while his best mate Vinicius has three. Asensio is yet to score.
13. Borussia Monchengladbach (Alassane Plea, Lars Stindl, Marcus Thuram) – 12 goals
Borussia Monchengladbach’s trio have all got four goals each to their name this season. Plea scored three of his during the 6-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, while 32-year-old Stindl has four in seven Bundesliga games and Thuram scored twice against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
12. Inter (Lautaro Martínez, Romelu Lukaku, Nicolo Barella) – 12 goals
Martinez has started the season well with five goals in 10 appearances, while Lukaku has picked up where he left off with seven in six games. Barella hasn’t been able to contribute in the form of goals just yet.
11. Barcelona (Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati, Antoine Griezmann) – 13 goals
Messi only scored his first goal from open play last weekend but he’s already scored five from the penalty spot this season. Fati is ruled out for the next four months but he started the season well with five goals. Griezmann has got himself on the scoresheet twice in nine matches.
10. Juventus (Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata) – 14 goals
Despite his run-in with Covid, Ronaldo has six goals in five matches, while Morata also has six – although he’d have several more if it wasn’t for VAR. Dybala notched twice in the Champions League against Ferencvaros.
9. PSG (Neymar, Moise Kean, Kylian Mbappe) – 14 goals
What an unlikely trio. Neymar has two goals in his four matches this season, while Mbappe is flying with seven in eight matches this season. But Kean has hit the ground running in France with five goals in seven games. Who saw that coming?
8. Manchester United (Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford) – 15 goals
Martial is letting the trio down with just two goals – both in the Champions League. Fernandes has scored six, while Rashford has seven in 12.
7. Atalanta (Papu Gomez, Duvan Zapata, Luis Muriel) – 15 goals
Atlanta couldn’t score against a Liverpool defence continuing Rhys Williams in the Champions League but they are usually free-scoring in Serie A. The trio have five goals in seven games each to their name.
6. Chelsea (Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech) – 16 goals
Three new signings that have started their career in west London promisingly. Werner is a born goalscorer, while Havertz’s hat-trick against Barnsley in the League Cup helped. Ziyech looks like he could be the best of the bunch.
5. Atletico Madrid (Luis Suárez, Joao Felix, Marcos Llorente) – 16 goals
Suarez is determined to prove Barcelona wrong and has already scored five goals for Atleti. Felix is starting to show why the club spent £113m on him in 2019 with seven strikes while Llorente has four.
4. Borussia Dortmund (Erling Haaland, Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho) – 17 goals
Haaland is carrying this trio with 11 in 11 this season, while it’s great to see Reus back in form. Sancho will be looking to increase his goal output with just two to his name in 2020/21.
3. Liverpool (Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino) – 18 goals
Could this trio soon turn into Mane, Salah and Diogo Jota? Mane and Salah are as good as ever but Firmino has seemingly lost his touch infront of goal.
2. Bayern Munich (Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman) – 22 goals
Not even Leroy Sane can figure in this trio. Lewandowski is probably the best striker in world football and has 13 in 11 and is flanked by world-class wingers in the form of Gnabry and Coman.
1. Tottenham Hotspur (Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, Son Heung-min) – 24 goals
Son has notched 10 in 13 while Kane has an impressive 13 in 14 games. Bale can consider himself lucky to even get a mention with just a solitary goal to his name.
