Arsenal are in a bad place at the moment.

The Gunners suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend.

That results leaves Arsenal in 12th, having won four and lost four of their opening eight Premier League games.

The Gunners have not challenged for the title in years and they are unlikely to win their first league trophy since 2004.

And a major reason for their decline in recent years has been their inability to be successful in the transfer market.

Arsenal have splashed the cash over the years but more often than not their big signings have not come off.

And a tweet from ESPN shows just how poor their recruitment has been.

Using figures from Transfermarkt, ESPN have listed Arsenal's 11 biggest signings ever and listed how they are performing at the moment.

11. Lucas Torreira | £25.8m

The Uruguayan midfielder failed at Arsenal. He was shipped out on loan to Atletico Madrid this summer.

10. William Saliba | £27m

The Frenchman is one for the future. But he's yet to play for Arsenal's first team, meaning he isn't contributing anything at the moment.

9. Henrikh Mkhitarayan | £30.6m

The Armenian flopped at the club. He signed for Roma on a permanent deal this summer.

8. Shkodran Mustafi | £36.9m

The German's time at Arsenal has been riddled with poor mistakes. He's yet to start in the Premier League this season and looks set to depart when his contract runs out next summer.

7. Alexis Sanchez | £38.3m

Sanchez was brilliant for Arsenal but he ended up leaving them for one of their biggest rivals, Man United. He now plays for Inter.

6. Granit Xhaka | £40.5m

The Swiss international is decent, but he hasn't produced performances expected of a £40m player. He was made captain last year but lost it after telling Arsenal fans to 'f*** off'.

5. Mesut Ozil | £42.3m

Ozil thrived in his early years at the club but he's now been frozen out by Arteta. He has not been included in Arsenal's squads for the Premier League or Europa League. He's likely played his last game in an Arsenal shirt.

4. Thomas Partey | £45m

Partey is a great player and he's exactly what Arsenal needed. He's currently out injured, though.

3. Alexandre Lacazette | £47.7m

Lacazette is struggling badly at the moment. He's missed some golden chances and his last goal for the club came back in September.

2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang | £57.4m

The Gabonese striker has been brilliant for Arsenal but he's in a real bad patch at the moment. His only Premier League goal this season has been a penalty.

1. Nicolas Pepe | £72m

Pepe has found first-team opportunities hard to come by with Willian being preferred at the moment. He's made just one Premier League start so far this season.

That list makes for grim reading.

Arsenal have spent £463.5m on these 11 players in the past six years. Not one of them is performing to a high level at Arsenal right now.

It's important to note that not all the signings above have been flops. Aubemayang has been sensational, for example, but he's going through a really rough patch at the moment.

Partey looks great but he's currently suffering with an injury.

A for some of the others, it's been money wasted. Mustafi, Pepe and Lacazette were all brought for big money and they have struggled. As of right now, they have all not been value for money.

Mkhitaryan and Torreira were also very costly and failed at the club.

If Arsenal are to be successful in the future, they really need to find a way to improve their recruitment.
