Liverpool are in real trouble.

That isn't a sentence we're used to hearing but it is, unfortunately, the current reality for Jurgen Klopp's side.

They might be just a point off top spot in the Premier League but they are now facing a period of extended time without their two main centre-back options; Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

The former is set to be out for the rest of the 2020/21 season after undergoing surgery on a knee ligament injury he suffered after a shocking tackle from Jordan Pickford.

However, it's gone from bad to worse for Liverpool and their backline.

Gomez now fears that he could be out for a similar amount of time after sustaining his own knee injury while training with England during the current international break.

According to the Mirror, the player was in a huge amount of distress before returning to Liverpool to have scans and ascertain the level of damage.

Joe Gomez playing for England

Unfortunately for the defender, he has already suffered a very serious knee injury before, but what happened on that occasion and how long was he out for?

Having just signed for the Reds from Charlton for a fee of £3.5m, he was playing under Gareth Southgate for England's U21s.

That was until he was forced off with a problem in a 3-0 win against Kazakhstan in 2015.

What followed was a considerably long period on the sidelines. Southgate issued a statement claiming that it was "nothing too serious," but that prophecy turned out to be incorrect.

Further scans revealed that Gomez had an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and thus, would miss the rest of the season.

In fact, it took the youngster another 15 months before he was taking to the field for Liverpool again.

That meant he missed over 50 matches for the Reds and had his progression as a footballer seriously dented.

That being said, it's a promising sign that he did bounce back from that issue so well.

Joe Gomez and Alexander-Arnold

Gomez has since established himself as an England regular and has won both the Premier League and Champions League under Klopp.

Last term he played 43 times during a triumphant campaign for the Merseyside club. It's sad that he is unlikely to play again this season.
