The FIFA Puskas Award is designed to crown the best goal scored in each year of the beautiful game.Naturally, the very idea of doing so is wholly subjective, but I think we can all agree that football's governing body has made better selections than others since its inception 11 years ago. There's no denying that Zlatan Ibrahimovic's bicycle kick against England, Cristiano Ronaldo's thunderbolt at FC Porto and Olivier Giroud's Arsenal scorpion kick were all deserving winners.

FIFA Puskas Award

However, on the flip side, the footballing world did a collective double-take when Mohamed Salah inexplicably won the 2018 gong for his rather vanilla, albeit impressive, strike against Everton.

The biggest criticism you can lodge against the accolade is its unabashed leaning towards the big names of the sport, though we do concede that the 2015 and 2016 awards are exceptions.

And let's just say we'll all be hoping that FIFA isn't blinded by the superstars too much this year because a glorious contender for the award has emerged from Denmark this week.

Astonishing goal in Denmark

Superliga star Nicolai Geertsen went viral when he scored a stunning goal for Danish top-flight side Lyngby Boldklub which is both remarkable for its uniqueness as well as its brilliance.

Footage of the goal was captured from the sidelines during Lyngby's 9-0 cup thrashing over Slagelse and what makes it all the more astonishing is that it came courtesy of a defender.

The versatile Geertsen rattled the crossbar with a stunning scissor kick that could have been a Puskas Award contender in its own right, only to take the biscuit with his incredible reaction.

Despite being seated in the penalty area because of his acrobatics, Geertsen adjusted superbly well to find the back of the net with another volley as the rebound flew towards him.

Puskas Award favourite?

It was the sort of crazy rebound and ricochet you'd expect from a viral clip of FIFA 21, never mind a defender producing two volleys in two seconds that most forwards don't muster in an entire career.

You can check out the amazing strike that, for our money, has to be nailed on for the Puskas Award down below:

Incredibly unique goal

Have you ever seen a goal like that before?

You could try and recreate the scenario 1,000 times over and there's not a chance the ball would ever rebound so perfectly off the crossbar again to allow a second bite of the cherry.

In fact, the madness was such that the stadium announcer accidentally credited the strike as a goal for Marcel Romer, clearly in disbelief that defender Geertsen could possibly have scored it.

According to RT, Geertsen said of his astonishing strike: "It was not rehearsed - not at all from a corner kick But the ball was there for me to try it, so of course I had a shot. It was cool to see it go in.

"It is, of course, one of my best goals. If I am being completely greedy, I would have liked to see it go in at first, but I will settle for this way."

Honestly, Nicolai, there's no need to complain because the two-time strike is exactly what makes it so special and we'll take no shame in campaigning for it to win FIFA's top prize this year.
