Scotland qualify for Euro 2020: Ryan Christie gives emotional interview after Serbia win

  • Kobe Tong

Scotland have ended their 22-year wait for an international tournament and it couldn't have come in more dramatic circumstances.

The Tartan Army have long been mocked by their neighbours on the British Isles for seemingly bottling their biggest moments and failing to step up to the grade since the 1998 World Cup.

But their rivals aren't laughing now after a second consecutive penalty shootout booked them a place at Euro 2020 in what promises to be a historic summer for the Scottish people.

Initial heartbreak for Scotland

However, Scotland being Scotland, their play-off victory didn't come easily and that's in spite of giving a good account of themselves against Serbia on Thursday night.

In fact, Steve Clarke's men had maintained a 1-0 lead with stoppage time just seconds away when one of the most Scotland things you could image happened to Scotland: conceding a late goal.

Despite largely making headlines for flopping at Real Madrid, it was Luka Jovic who produced what looked to be a heartbreaking moment by heading home from a corner in the 90th minute.

Scotland win on penalties

However, credit to Scotland because they could have let that damning moment get the better of them, but they maintained their composure and kept the scores at 1-1 throughout stoppage time.

So, to penalties and after the opening nine spot-kicks all rippled the net, David Marshall sent everybody north of the border into raptures by saving from Aleksandar Mitrović.

Give or take a terrifying few seconds where VAR had to check whether Marshall had stepped over his line or not, the Scottish celebrations were unreserved and a truly brilliant sight even for neutrals.

Christie's amazing interview

You've got to applaud the spirit in this Scottish team and what it meant to the squad couldn't have been more apparent than in their emotional post-match interviews.

And none of them came across more genuine than that of Ryan Christie, who had opened the scoring what felt like an entirety ago with some fine footwork and a cool left-footed finish.

Christie could be seen fighting back the tears as he was quizzed after Scotland's historic moment and you can be sure to see why it went viral by checking out the full video down below:

What it means to Scotland

This is football. This is what it means.

As much as the international break can be boring sometimes, nothing can compare to players representing their countries in the games that really matter and Christie illustrated that perfectly.

You have to experience the low moments to really feel the highs of the good moments and the jubilation in the eyes of the Scotland players should remind us all why we love the beautiful game.

Scotland and Christie will compete to become European champions next summer and everything will start in the group stages against England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

But regardless of what happens when the tournament itself rolls around, I think the Scotland players are all due a round of applause and the list Christie deserves is a massive pat on the back.
