Lionel Messi and Argentina were left frustrated during their World Cup qualifier versus Paraguay in the early hours of this morning.

The Barcelona legend and his teammates had to settle for a 1-1 draw at the La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires.

Angel Romero opened the scoring on the night for Paraguay, the midfielder converting from the penalty spot after 22 minutes.

Argentina responded just before the break through Stuttgart's Nicolas Gonzalez, but the hosts failed to push on to claim the win.

Messi did have a goal chalked off by VAR midway through the second period, the technology intervening to report a foul in the build-up - a very dubious call.

But the technology's decision to disallow the goal didn't seem to impact Messi's work ethic whatsoever.

In the final minutes of the game, the Barcelona star showed that he's still more than willing to press and defend for his team.

The 33-year-old was the subject of criticism for being 'lazy' during Barcelona's 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League before the international break.

A clip of the Argentine walking while the opposition had control of the ball quickly went viral across social media and many were quick to jump on the 'Messi doesn't care' bandwagon.

In truth, the clip was simply taken out of context. Messi has always spent much of his time on the pitch walking, sparking into life at the precise moment his team needs him the most.

If his side are exposed defensively - like Argentina were when he lost the ball against Paraguay - he will always do his best to help out those behind him.

But the guy didn't become arguably the greatest player and goal scorer of all time by sprinting around the pitch to unnecessarily press every opposing defender when they have the ball...
