The Stewart Donald era could soon be over at Sunderland.

According to the Guardian, a takeover led by Juan Sartori and 22-year-old Kyril Louis-Dreyfu could be completed within the next two weeks in what could be a major boost for the Black Cats.

Having suffered for so long, the likely quick-fire nature of it all represents some good news at long last.

The Black Cats' struggles have been well-documented over the last few years and Donald is understood to have wanted to sell the club since the start of 2020. Now, after months of reported due diligence and talks, the agreement is said to be close.

While Donald initially looked to be a welcome reprieve from the Ellis Short era, his decision to put Sunderland up for sale earlier this year was celebrated by sections of the support, who spoke of the need to have an owner with a long-term plan on how to restore former glories.

Resigning from his post as chairman in July, Donald apologised for the inability to help lead the team to promotion back to the Championship. His regime was also criticised for confusing messages and reported to have put off any potential buyers due to a £20.5m hole in their accounts.

With that in mind, this has to be seen as good news for a fanbase to have endured so much pain in the last few years.

There is no guarantee a new owner will provide better days - much as Donald himself proved - though the situation had got so bleak with the club in their lowest-ever position, any boost will surely be welcome.
