For Spurs over the international break, much of the talk has been about a certain Christian Eriksen.

The Dane didn't renew his contract with Tottenham last season and as a result, joined Inter Milan in January.

However, it's not gone according to plan for the attacking midfielder who now admits that not everything has played out like he hoped.

Speaking this week, he admitted: "This isn't what I dreamed of. All players want to play as much as possible, but the coach decides who gets to go on the pitch."

So far this term, the 28-year-old has played a bit part for Inter, appearing five times in Serie A, but twice from the substitutes bench.

And with the creative outlet now expressing his frustrations, it's Spurs he could re-sign for.

That's the word this week, but it seems far-fetched to suggest that Eriksen will be back in north London before the season is out.

Christian Eriksen

With Jose Mourinho's side sitting second in the Premier League, it's hard to suggest they miss him, but their 1-0 win over West Brom sparked questions about their lack of creativity from a central area.

With that in mind, it got us thinking about someone they targeted in 2018 and very nearly signed.

The player in question is Jack Grealish, a man who is very much the flavour of the month at the moment.

When Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge, he and Daniel Levy launched an assault on Aston Villa for a player, who at the time, was still playing in the Championship.

Jack Grealish

A bid of £25m was lodged, but Villa knocked it back and told Spurs they weren't entertaining the idea of selling their prized possession. That's understandable, but in hindsight, they should have gone all out to sign someone who is now one of the most entertaining and creative in English football.

Truth be told, the Lilywhites let Grealish slip through the net, picking Giovani Lo Celso a year after in a deal that cost the club £27.2m. They also signed Tanguy Ndombele for a mighty £62.8m which once again, in hindsight, wasn't the best of ideas.

Whatever you want to say about Tottenham's recruitment, the latter has been a big mistake and that kind of money could have been reserved for someone like Grealish.

He now has a price tag of £80m on his head and it wouldn't be a surprise if it continues to rise.

The 25-year-old has had a breathtaking campaign at Villa, scoring four goals and racking up five assists in just seven outings.

Grealish has now worked himself into Gareth Southgate's England plans and assisted Jadon Sancho's goal against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday evening.

If ever there was an Eriksen successor, this was it and he was staring them in the face two years ago.

Now, they will have to fight tooth and nail to acquire him, that's if they're still interested, but it's doubtful Levy will have the financial capabilities to do so.

This looks like it'll be one that got away for Spurs.
