Joe Gomez’s lengthy setback is the latest injury news to rock Liverpool but, the good news is, the January transfer window opens in less than two months.

Fabinho is thought to be closing in on a return to fitness while Joel Matip, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at least provide bodies centrally despite the crisis the champions have endured.

On the transfer front, The Athletic have shared some insight in regards to Liverpool's potential activity.

They claim that while it is too early to say whether or not Liverpool will spend in January, they certainly do not have a shortage of targets.

Indeed, around 30 were believed to have been scouted when they bought Virgil van Dijk in January 2018, so those behind the scenes at Anfield aren't exactly coming into the market underprepared.

Clearly, there's no guarantee Liverpool will buy but Jamie Carragher pointed out he believed the club were weak in the central defensive area as it is even prior to van Dijk's injury following the departure of Dejan Lovren over the course of the summer.

Dayot Upamencano Liverpool latest news

Naturally, a number of names have been linked.

The likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamenco have been touted as potential targets though would surely cost an awful lot of money given their respective reputations.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp has urged Jurgen Klopp to bring in reinforcement and the German strengthening at the turn of the year is not without precedent given van Dijk's own arrival.

With that in mind, expect the rumour mill to go in to overdrive whether Liverpool seriously attempt to buy or not.
