There were some memorable moments for Liverpool in 2008/09.
The Reds, managed by Rafa Benitez, completed the double over Manchester United, including a stunning 4-1 win at Old Trafford.
Liverpool lost just two games in the league all season but too many draws cost them the title.
In Europe, they needed a 117th-minute winner from Dirk Kuyt in a two-legged qualifier against Standard Liege to reach the group stages of the Champions League.
They made it look difficult. But the group stage proved to be a doddle - Liverpool won four out of six matches to finish top of Group D.
Real Madrid awaited in the round of 16 and it proved to be a memorable encounter.
A late goal from Yossi Benayoun saw Benitez’s side take a 1-0 lead back to Anfield.
This was a Real side that included Sergio Ramos, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Raul and Gonzalo Higuain.
But Liverpool made those household names look like they didn’t belong as they romped to a 4-0 win in the return fixture.
The scoreline would have been even more punishing were it not for Iker Casillas’ excellence in the Real goal.
Fernando Torres got the ball rolling when he turned in Kuyt’s cross in the 16th minute.
Steven Gerrard made it 2-0 on the night when he scored a penalty shortly afterwards, and the Liverpool captain added a third after the restart.
Andrea Dossena completed the rout with two minutes remaining.
It was an incredible performance in front of a delirious Anfield crowd, who gave Torres a standing ovation when he was replaced and applauded every player at the final whistle.
'The Day Steven Gerrard Destroyed Real Madrid'
It’s hard not to feel like Gerrard didn’t deserve his own moment of adulation, though.
The midfielder delivered a captain’s display, stepping up like he so often did on a European night.
His individual highlights from that match have been uploaded to YouTube in a video titled: ‘The Day Steven Gerrard Destroyed Real Madrid’.
He was the driving force for Liverpool, with his two goals ending the tie as a contest.
Peak Gerrard, that.
Reports emerged shortly after that game claiming Real were keen to bring Gerrard to the Spanish capital - as they were in 2005 - but he rejected a move.
That was as good as it got for Gerrard and Liverpool in the Champions League, though.
Chelsea ended their run in the quarter-final with a dramatic 7-5 aggregate win.
