Reliant Robin backs Wenger

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie is determined to help his side find the consistency needed to challenge for the Barclays Premier League title next season.

In a season that promised so much, the Gunners' weaknesses, particulary in the latter part of the season have put pay to Arsene Wenger's hopes and aspirations of bringing success back to a club that has now gone six years without a trophy.

Van Persie though is taking the positives from a campaign that has on a personal level proved to be one of the best in his career so far.

Having taken until 1 January to open his goalscoring account in the league, the Dutch dangerman's New Year's resolution went on to see him claim 20 goals in 22 games in all competition for the Gunners.

Despite the club's downturn in form, Van Persie's season went from strength to strength, with Wenger's tactics to deploy his frontman as a sole striker seemingly having no impact on his ability to find the net.

"I don't feel lonely up front," Van Persie said, "because I have Cesc [Fábregas] around me, I have [Jack] Wilshere, I have Samir Nasri, [Andrey] Arshavin, [Theo] Walcott. It's true that (for Arsenal) it's a modern take on Total Football.

"We came very, very close to being champions and if you look at our games against the big [top four] teams, we are first in that small league."

Van Persie scoffed at suggestions he is unhappy with life at the Emirates, and gave further backing to Wenger's football model, insisting that it is not a case of if, but when it will start to bare fruit.

"I'm an Arsenal player, of course. I have a deal until 2013 so two more seasons.

"But we need to be more consistent because we have everything in our team. If you look at Barcelona, they are playing four or five top games after each other and that's what our aim should be as well."
