Blackburn boss Steve Kean wants to retain the services of on-loan Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones as he looks to strengthen his squad this summer.

The 29-year-old made the temporary switch from the German club in January after a fall-out with then Schalke coach Felix Magath. He has made a favourable impression in his 15 appearances for Rovers and was part of the side which won 3-2 at Wolves to secure Barclays Premier League status for another season.

Kean is pleased with his side's conclusion to the campaign - they are unbeaten in four matches - but knows he has to bring in new blood. He said: "It's massive to stay up because the financial implications of dropping down a division are horrific."

He added: "I had a positive meeting with the (Blackburn) owners. They've got significant investment, they want to take the club forward, we've got a good solid group of players.

"But we need to strengthen in certain areas, not to replace anyone, but to help. We've had a lack of goals so we'd like to address that at the top end of the pitch. If we can keep guys like Jermaine Jones, who we've got on loan, it will be good for the squad."

Kean is delighted with the way his team have gelled together and shown great spirit in the battle to survive.

He said: "I sensed a few weeks ago that we would be okay. You don't go up against the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City and perform like that if there is any type of trouble in the camp.

"It's been a bumpy ride the last six months but, in the last nine games, we've managed to get seven positive results. We are unbeaten in the last four, we've played against a lot of good teams, not got the points we deserved and showed lots of good performances.

"The group has come together, I'm delighted the way it has gelled.

"We've become a better team, a better club, and I'm delighted for the owners."
