The season came to a thrilling climax on Sunday, with Blackburn, Blackpool, Birmingham, Wolves and Wigan all battling for survival. Of the five teams vying to stay up, only Blackburn did not fall into the bottom three at any point.

Manchester United were crowned Barlcays Premier League champions after beating Blackpool 4-2 at Old Trafford. Victory for United condemned Blackpool to relegation, and left Ian Holloway bitterly disappointed.

Carling Cup winners Birmingham were also relegated after losing 2-1 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Wigan pulled off a miraculous escape at Stoke, having been in the bottom three for 75 minutes of their encounter.

Wolves found themselves 3-0 down to Blackburn, yet managed to secure survival on goal difference after netting twice in the second half.

Elsewhere, Chelsea lost 1-0 at Everton - a result which saw Carlo Ancelotti sacked as Blues' boss.

Manchester City secured third place and an automatic passage to the Champions League after winning 2-0 against Bolton.

Arsenal suffered a disappointing end to the season; drawing 2-2 with Fulham, meaning they had to settle for a fourth placed finish.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa beat Liverpool 1-0, Newcastle drew 3-3 with West Brom and already relegated West Ham lost 3-0 to Sunderland at the Boleyn Ground.
