Arsenal will bid for long-term target Chris Samba this summer, according to The Daily Star.

The Congolese defender played a pivotal role in helping Blackburn beat the drop and now Arsene Wenger has his sights on the bringing the man mountain to north-London.

The Gunners have seen defensive problems undermine their challenge for the title, but with Samba in their ranks, Arsenal feel they could finally make a genuine challenge for the league championship.

Whatsmore, despite having been recently taken over, a fee of £10 million would be difficult for Blackburn to reject as Wenger's desperation to tighten his back-four continues.

The French boss was hugely criticised after signing the likes of Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny and not one big name defender, but this summer the Arsenal boss appears to want to make amends.

Gary Cahill and Roger Johnson are also on Arsenal's radar.
