Arsenal target Jan Vertonghen is ready for a move to Manchester City, according to defender Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian international has been in sublime form for Ajax this season, inspiring them to their first domestic title for seven years.

And fellow countryman Kompany, a rock at the back for FA Cup winners City, says the defender would be best suited to a move to Eastlands, rather than Arsenal.

"You hear 40 names per month of players who could move to Manchester City. However, it is not a coincidence that Vertonghen is linked with the club," Kompany said to

"Jan is ready to make the next step and is good enough for Manchester City. I am sure that he will succeed at his next club, regardless of whether he joins us or decides to move elsewhere. He is simply a fantastic footballer."

While City have looked solid for much of the season, Arsenal by contrast have looked decidedly dodgy, with their problems at the back coming to a head during the Carling Cup final, when Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczesny collided allowing Obafemi Martins to net the winner for Birmingham City.

The defeat was the catalyst for a retched run for Arsenal, where they were knocked out of the Champions League and the FA Cup, and slipped away in the title race.
