Newcastle are reportedly monitoring Egypt midfielder Shikabala in their pursuit of summer reinforcements.

According to to talkSPORT, the versatile Zamalek star is on the radar of the Magpies, while Blackburn and Birmingham are also keeping tabs on his contract situation with great interest.

The 25-year-old has six months left to run on his current deal at the Cairo International Stadium, but has allegedly alerted Newcastle by stating his desire to move to the Barclays Premier League.

Newcastle are known to be keen to bolster their midfield ranks during the transfer window, with dynamic Lille ace Yohan Cabaye seemingly set to move to St James' Park in the coming days.

Cabaye and Shikabala would certainly push the likes of Cheik Tiote, Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan for starting berths in the Newcastle side, providing Alan Pardew with a welcome selection headache.

Nolan, meanwhile, is currently stalling over extending his stay at St James' Park after it was claimed Newcastle have tabled an unsatisfactory offer to the 28-year-old.

The midfield maestro scored 12 times for Newcastle last season and is keen to sign a new long-term contract with the club, but has so far been offered only a two-year extension.
