Manchester United have made a last-ditch attempt to bring Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones to the club, and deny Liverpool a swoop for the centre-back, according to Sky Sports News.

The Englishman was set to join Liverpool this week before flying out for the Under-21 European Championships which start on Saturday.

But after being confirmed as part of the traveling party to Denmark, reports have emerged that in the fact the defender will sign for United, and snub a move to Liverpool.

The 19-year-old has made a big impact for Rovers this season and helped them stay in the Barclays Premier League on the final day of the season.

Liverpool had looked odds on to sign Jones this summer after a deal was reportedly agreed, but United have now hit the front for the £16 million rated centre-back.

Jones was said to prefer a move to Liverpool or United because of the close vicinity either club would be to his Lancashire home.
