Wayne Rooney has tweeted to fans that he thinks Phil Jones is one of the toughest defenders he’s faced, as the star looks set to move to Manchester United.

Reports are circulating that Jones had a medical at Old Trafford today, and the BBC claim that the England Under-21 centre half has rejected offers from Arsenal and Liverpool to make a deal with Manchester United.

And Rooney has added fuel to the fire by writing on his twitter account that Jones is a top quality player for Blackburn.

"Phil Jones is a good young English player. One of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield too,” Rooney said.

A short time later, Rooney added that he didn’t know if the star had signed on the dotted line at Old Trafford just yet.

"I don't know if Phil Jones is signing for us, just saying he is a good player that's all. I haven't got a clue if he is signing or not."

But despite Rooney’s insistence that Jones isn’t a done deal for United, the writing appears to be on the wall for the star, with numerous press sources confirming that Jones has definitely made the decision to head to Old Trafford next season.

Jones was planning to travel with the England Under 21s squad to Denmark today, but hasn’t arrived with the team, signalling that he’s in the midst of a medical and ironing out the details of a deal with the club.
