Liverpool have been confirmed as one of the clubs interested in signing Argentine defender Matias Silvestre.

The Catania captain has been impressive in Serie 'A' this season, and is currently enjoying his fourth year in Italy after signing from Boca Juniors in January 2008.

Pietro Lo Monaco, general manager at Catania, admitted back in April that the 26-year-old may have to further his career away from the Stadio Angelo Massimino, and claims that Liverpool are one of the clubs chasing the signature.

"Top of the list of those moving on is Silvestre," Lo Monaco told Itasportpress.

"I'd struggle to keep him here, considering what a great player he is. There are two Italian clubs tracking him, but Liverpool and Villarreal are also interested in Silvestre."

Kenny Dalglish is known to be in the market for a defender this summer, with a left back thought to be the priority for the Liverpool boss. However, centre backs have been linked, with a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher another issue that the Anfield outfit are looking to resolve.

With Merseyside owners Fenway Sports Group providing money for the Scottish boss, further additions are expected following Jordan Henderson's £20 million move to Liverpool earlier in the week. A winger and striker are also thought to be on the agende.
