Charlton have confirmed they are in advanced negotiations with striker Paul Hayes following his release from Preston.

Addicks manager Chris Powell is keen to recruit the forward as he bids to guide the London outfit back into the Championship this season.

A club statement said: "Discussions have already taken place with the 27-year-old, and the club is confident it will beat off interest from two other clubs who competed in last season's Championship so Hayes will be present when pre-season training begins at Sparrows Lane at the end of the month."

Dagenham-born Hayes was signed by Preston on a free transfer from Scunthorpe last May but struggled to establish himself at Deepdale and was sent out on loan to Barnsley.

Charlton have so far signed Danny Hollands, John Sullivan and Bradley Pritchard, and have agreed a deal for rookie goalkeeper Nick Pope.
