Mixed bag for Stoke at start of the season

Stoke have been handed a stern test to begin the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League campaign with Chelsea travelling to the Britannia Stadium on the opening day.

Away matches against newly-promoted Norwich and Roy Hodgson's West Brom follow before Liverpool are the next side to travel to the Potteries, while a trip to Sunderland is next on the agenda.

Manchester United also lie in wait before the end of October in what could prove to be a treacherous period for Tony Pulis & Co.

The Stoke boss will see the festive fixtures as three winnable games, with home matches against Aston Villa and Wigan followed by a trip to Blackburn.

Points at this stage of the season are often hard to come by, and - with encounters with Manchester United and Liverpool also in January - a good return at Christmas will be even more important.
