Manchester United starlet Javier Hernandez has scored a sixth goal for his country in four matches, taking Mexico to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Guatemala in the Gold Cup.

"This time it was different than the other games when we scored first," Hernandez said. "We went in and worked hard in the second half to get chances. My goal was instinct. I saw the ball at my feet and put the ball in the net."

Hernandez hit goal gold in the 66th minute, with Mexico drawing 1-1 and desperate for a goal to win the quarter final and move into the semis. Mexico now face Honduras on June 22nd.

The ground where the two sides will face off, Reliant Stadium, holds special memories for Hernandez, as it was the stadium where the 23-year-old scored in his first appearance for Manchester United in the Red Devils’ pre season USA tour.

Hernandez has made it clear that he is staying with Manchester United for the long term, with the striker keen to make up for the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

“I am very happy that, as a squad, we won the English championship,” Hernandez said. “This is a wonderful thing, especially after a title race so competitive. Our team has such soul and such spirit. Success is written into the DNA of this club – I’m at the best club in the world. There is only the Champions League defeat that sticks in the throat.”

Looking back on his debut season, Hernandez says he surprised even himself over his performances. “Early in the season, I thought I would have limited playing time,” Hernandez said.

“At best, I thought my season would be coming off the bench late in games, trying to unlock a complicated situation.

“Basically, the aim for the season was essentially to adapt to the Premier League. But gradually I got playing time, and I started to feel confident, scoring a few goals. Everything was so fast. I could not have hoped for it. I had a dream season.”
