Manchester United and Chelsea have been placed 'on alert' by Marouane Fellaini, according to reports.

The Belgian international midfielder has revealed that he hopes to play at the 'top level' in club football, but does not believe that Everton are currently at that level.

"One thing is certain, I want to play in a team that wins trophies and play in the Champions League," said Fellaini.

"But Everton is a team below the top level."

The News of the World reports that both Manchester United and Chelsea have been placed on alert for the former Standard Liège star, who is believed to be valued by the Toffees at a staggering £25 million.

Earlier in the week the club claimed to have held 'encouraging' contract talks with the player, whose comments come with the transfer window moving into full swing.

Manchester United have been linked with a handful of central midfielders in recent weeks, with Lassana Diarra, Raphael Varane and Daniel De Rossi also speculatively named alongside the Red Devils.

Sir Alex Ferguson hinted in May that the club would look to make three signings at Old Trafford this summer, and after the addition of Phil Jones and likely arrival of David de Gea, Fellaini could be the third name to come the way of Manchester United.

Chelsea have also been linked with midfielders, although the clubs targets are likely to change following the arrival of Andre Villas-Boas as the new manager at Stamford Bridge.

The former Porto boss has reportedly been handed a transfer war chest in the region of £80 million by owner Roman Abramovich, and is thought to be targeting three players from his old club as the first summer signings for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
