Northern Irish defender Michael Smith has become Bristol Rovers' eighth summer signing.

The 22-year-old right-back joins the League Two club from Ballymena United on a two-year deal. Rovers overcame competition from Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock to sign Smith, and manager Paul Buckle is delighted he has been able to add another piece to the jigsaw as he rebuilds the squad ahead of the new season.

"I did my coaching qualifications in Ireland and have quite a few contacts over there," said Buckle.

"Having watched Michael, I spoke to several other people who knew about him - including Chris Coleman.

"When Kilmarnock came in for him, I thought we might lose him, so I'm delighted he wanted to come here and we've got him."
