Preston manager Phil Brown is optimistic that striker Neil Mellor will remain at Deepdale.
Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily linked with a permanent move for the 28-year-old after he spent last season on loan at Hillsborough.
Brown told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I've spoken to him and Neil is very positive about playing for North End."
He added: "If you've got a player who's going to score you 20 to 25 goals in one season it's a good start for me.
"I spoke with Neil after the season finished and he believed there was a Championship club coming in for him - he wanted to play Championship football but now he's very positive about giving Preston a full season."
Mellor, who started his career with Liverpool, has not figured for Preston since April 2010 and was allowed to join the Owls last summer after being transfer-listed by previous North End boss Darren Ferguson.
