Sunderland have confirmed the signing of England under-21 striker Connor Wickham for £8 million from Ipswich Town.

The 18-year-old, whose fee could rise to £12 million, has signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

Wickham scored nine goals in 40 games for the Tractor Boys last season, including his first professional hat-trick against Doncaster Rovers, feats which earned him the The Football League's Young Player of the Year award.

The forward was also part of the England under-21 squad at the recent European Championships in Denmark, a year after scoring the winning goal for the under 17's during their own European final.
