Tottenham have reportedly emerged as the frontrunners in the pursuit of Blackburn defender - and Arsenal target - Chris Samba.

According to The Mirror, the north London duo are both chasing the £12 million-rated 27-year-old, but Spurs are now the favourites to seal a deal for his signature.

Spurs are said to be considering a cash-plus-player offer as Harry Redknapp looks to trim his squad, with the likes of Robbie Keane and Wilson Palacios said to be surplus to requirements.

The Spurs boss is thought to be keen to reinforce his defence during the transfer window, and Samba would certainly provide competition for the likes of Michael Dawson, Ledley King and William Gallas at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are even more intent to recruit an aerially dominant centre-back before the start of the new season, and Samba has frequently been linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger has grown tired of the failings of his current crop and has identified the acquisition of an imposing central defender as a summer priority.

The Arsenal boss has also been linked with Bolton's Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka of Everton.
