Cobblers sign a Corker

Northampton Town boss Gary Johnson has continued his recruitment drive at Sixfields, adding left-back Ashley Corker to his rapidly growing squad.

The former Middlesbrough player has been training with the club throughout pre-season thus far, and has impressed enough to earn a 12-month contract with the well-fancied Npower League Two side.

The signing follows Johnson's triple swoop for Freddy Hall, Nick McKoy and Lewis Young, brother of England international and Manchester United winger Ashley Young, which was announced last Thursday.

"We have been looking for a left-back and he did very well for us at the trial days," said the Cobblers boss.

"He has been winning the pre-season bleep tests and we have some very fit lads already at the club."

Corker is likely to go straight into the squad in Northamptonshire next term, filling the left-back position after both Marcus Hall and Liam Davies left the club in the early part of the summer.

"He is very grateful for this chance we have offered him and he is very single minded and determined to make the most of it. He has a lot of hunger, desire and determination and has shown that through the pre-season so far," added former Peterborough United boss Johnson.

"He is certainly good enough to be an asset at this level and hopefully he can progress higher with us."

Another keeper has joined the ranks this week as well, with Sam Walker joining the club on loan from Chelsea and competing for the No.1 position vacated by Chris Dunn, who joined Coventry City last month.
