Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira has retired from professional football, and takes on a newly-created role as football development executive at Eastland.

The French international is one of the most decorated in the nation's history, helping Les Bleus to World Cup and European Championship honours, as well as guiding Arsenal to three Barclays Premier League and four FA Cup trophies.

Having also played for Cannes, AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan and the Citizens, Vieira is happy to end his 18 year professional career to take on the role as part of Roberto Mancini's staff.

"This role is a fantastic new challenge for me and I am very grateful to Manchester City for offering me this opportunity," said the 35-year-old.

"I have a lot to learn about the non-playing areas of the business but there are many very experienced people here for me to learn from and I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to the club's ongoing success."

After making 47 appearances for City during his season and a half with the club, Vieira will now be working with the youth set-up at the club, as well as getting involved in certain community and commercial projects that the club are involved with.

It's an opportunity that excites the man, who made his last appearance for the club as a substitute in the FA Cup final victory over Stoke City in May.

"I am particularly pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the club's community scheme. Manchester City has a great reputation for its commitment to its community and charity partners and I believe I can help to take that message to an even greater audience," he concluded.

"Everyone at Manchester City – the fans, the staff and the players – have made me and my family feel very welcome here over the past two years and I am very happy to have been given the chance to stay and develop my career away from the pitch."
