Joe Cole could be heading to Villa Park after Stewart Downing's Anfield arrival, according to The Metro.

It is believed that Cole was discussed as a makeweight for Downing's move to Liverpool, but the brass at Villa rejected the proposal in favour of cash for their England international.

It's understood that despite Villa's repeated hands-off warnings to Liverpool regarding Downing, the sides agreed upon a fee in an amicable manner, leaving the door open to negotiations a deal for Cole.

However, it could be some time before these negotiations get underway, as Cole's preference would be to stay at Anfield with Liverpool.

It's believed that despite the arrivals of Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, and Jordan Henderson, all of which play in positions that Cole generally occupies, the former Chelsea man would like to at least sit down with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish to discuss the his future.

It's believed that if Dalglish believes the remaining three years on Cole's Liverpool contract will be played out anything like his first at Anfield, the former Hammer will look to move on with Villa interested in bringing him in to replace Downing.

Cole is just one of a number of midfielders at Liverpool with undecided futures.

Alberto Aquilani, Raul Meireles, and Milan Jovanovic have all been linked with moves away from Anfield to make way for the club's summer additions.

However, Meireles has said that he has no intention in leaving Liverpool, while Aquilani's agent continues to distance his client from rumours suggesting he could be off to Fiorentina, AC Milan, or Sunderland.
