Liverpool 'need cover' - urged to make defender addition

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans believes Kenny Dalglish needs to make a defender signing this summer.

The Reds have spent big already in the transfer window, with Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson moving to Merseyside for close to £30 million, whilst a £20 million offer for Stewart Downing has also been accepted.

However, Evans believes reinforcements are needed in the backline for the forthcoming campaign, with a lack of bodies and age two potential areas of concern for Liverpool.

"I do feel they [Liverpool] are going to need a little bit of cover in defence," Evans told talkSPORT.

"Daniel Agger is a great footballer but obviously injury prone and Jamie Carragher is still the lynch pin. He gives so much information to the players around him and the two young lads, Martin Kelly and John Flanagan.

"Carragher helps them an awful lot and he’ll be the biggest loss when he goes.

"I do feel Liverpool need to find a centre-back as we seem a bit short at the back and that’s a worry."

Whilst a host of attacking players have been linked with a move to Anfield this summer, few defenders have appeared on the Liverpool radar if British media reports are to be believed.

Dalglish and Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli have been working together to bring targets to the club this summer, and are known to be keen on a left back as well.

Jose Enrique and Michel Bastos have both been speculatively linked, although Evans is keen to see a centre back join the Liverpool ranks as well.
