Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has vowed to add to the club's trophy cabinet this season after six barren years at the Emirates.

The French manager has put last season's disappointments quickly behind him, and expects a good year for the North London club as they look to add to the last trophy they won, the FA Cup, back in 2005.

"I believe that the real destiny of this team is now there. They know as well as I know that we were very, very close last season. We intend to show everybody that we can do it," said the manager on the club's pre-season tour of Asia.

"You say, OK we missed our chance or you say, in our position, let's show everybody that we can do it and come back stronger. Which is what I think we can do because we are a young team and we can only be better.

“It demands the strength of character that champions have. That's what we want to show."

Wenger has taken personal responsibility for the club's failure to claim silverware last season, after a season that offered so much eventually fell flat following a nightmare run in February and March.

There were plenty of positives to take from the campaign though, including the performances of Jack Wilshere and Samir Nasri in another season of frustration. It was this promise that left the Frenchman so frustrated come the end of the season.

“It was because I took full responsibility for what happened. I knew at some stage that it was lost and I had so much hope for the team, because through November and December, you could feel that the team had really taken off and could win everything and it was so close," said the Frenchman ruefully.

"The last part of it was certainly the toughest because emotionally it was very difficult because we were on a low. You could see that the last three or four weeks were very difficult."
