Aston Villa have pulled ahead of Newcastle in the chase for Charles N’Zogbia, with Alan Pardew admitting that the Toon are no longer in the running to land the winger.

"I am told that Charles has got an imminent move, so I don't think that will be us,” Pardew said.

Aston Villa have long been in the running for N’Zogbia, but Newcastle were thought to have a more flexible budget with £35 million from the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January.

But now that Newcastle have made the admission that they are out of the running for N’Zogbia, Villa have reportedly submitted an official £10 million bid for the star, and hope to confirm the move for the France international by the end of the weekend.

Villa are particularly desperate to start making moves in the transfer window, after losing stars Ashley Young to Manchester United and Stewart Downing to Liverpool. N’Zogbia was thought to be a target for Liverpool as well as Newcastle and Aston Villa, but no other clubs have made a formal offer.
