Arsenal look set to make another bid for Everton star Phil Jagielka, as Arsene Wenger makes the defender his ‘first choice’ signing in the transfer window, according to The Independent.

Wenger made a bid for Jagielka said to be in the vicinity of £15 million, but the defender turned down Arsenal’s advances in March, choosing to sign a four year contract with Everton instead.

While Arsenal accepted Jagielka’s decision at the time, Wenger is now becoming increasingly desperate to make a defensive signing and end Arsenal’s six-season-long trophyless run.

In the past Wenger has been particularly frugal with his transfer funds, but the Arsenal manager is now willing to spend big to find a apt partner for Thomas Vermaalen.

Gary Cahill, another star defender in the Barclays Premier League, has also been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, but Wenger is reportedly holding out in the hopes that Jagielka will change his mind and make the move to the club.
