Reported Manchester United target Paulo Henrique Ganso has been told by Brazil coach Mano Menezes to further his career in Europe.

The 21-year-old midfielder currently plies his trade in with Santos in Sao Paulo, but Menezes believes Ganso should follow the lead of many before him and move away from Brazil and, preferably, to Italy.

Menezes said: "Ganso? He has the quality and the perfect tactical sense for Italian football. He should improve his energy, but he is young, time plays in his favour.

"The problem is that for Ganso, Santos and Brazilian football is not the center of the world and when you measure yourself with other internationals you find you must give even more.

"He will develop in Italy."

It was claimed in the weekend press that United were considering an offer for the £25 million-rated Brazil international as Sir Alex Ferguson scours the market for a long-term successor to Paul Scholes.

The United boss has also seen Owen Hargreaves leave Old Trafford this summer and - with Darron Gibson also linked with the exit - the Red Devils are in need of reinforcements.

However, should United have a genuine interest in Ganso, they are likely to have to contest AC Milan for his signature.
