Wigan Athletic have a tailor-made replacement for Charles N'Zogbia in 20-year-old Victor Moses, according to manager Roberto Martinez.
Moses scored twice for the Latics in their most recent pre-season friendly against Al Ahli as the club completed their pre-season tour of Austria.
With N'Zogbia due to complete his move to Aston Villa, a move that manager Martinez turned down earlier this summer, the Spaniard believes Moses can fill the Frenchman's shoes.
“Victor, we all know he’s a special talent,” Martinez told the Evening Post, moments after the final whistle. “It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability.
“Charlie has left a big hole in our team, but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up.
“Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie, but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”
The victory gives Wigan an important boost, two weeks before the beginning of the Premier League season, which begins against newly promoted Norwich City. And Moses says the team are heading in the right direction.
"The whole squad is getting up to speed now, we feel as though we're close to our peak fitness and with a couple more friendlies to go we're desperate for that opening game against Norwich City in a couple of weeks," he said.
"I've always said since I joined the club that I just want to play; I'm happiest when I'm out there on the pitch and whilst we've been in Austria it's what I've been able to do, so I'll keep working hard to make sure it stays that way."
