Canelo Alvarez beats Billy Joe Saunders: Slow-motion footage of uppercut that stopped fight

Canelo Alvarez beat Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday night

Canelo Alvarez stopped Billy Joe Saunders to unify the WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles on Saturday night in Texas.

Saunders put in a spirited performance but he came up short after damage sustained to his right eye.

Alvarez produced a devastating uppercut that caught Saunders flush in the eye in the eighth round.

Saunders initially survived the shot but his eye almost immediately swelled up.

He made it to the end of the round but, after assessing the damage, Saunders' corner decided to stop the fight.

Alvarez knew very soon after that his shot would be enough to secure him victory as he raised him arms in triumph mid-round.

Per the Evening Standard, Saunders has reportedly been taken to hospital with a suspected orbital fracture.

Eddie Hearn spoke of the stoppage after the bout.

“He couldn’t see,” Hearn told DAZN in post-fight interview. “I spoke to [trainer] Mark Tibbs and he said he couldn’t see and he didn’t let him go out.

Alvarez caught Saunders in the eye

“Billy boxed beautifully, but Canelo’s so strong, he took his time. Billy’s so tricky, but he busted his eye socket.

“You can see now going back there, you can see his eye. Canelo coming on strong at the back end of the fight. He’s too good.

“It was a great performance from Billy Joe Saunders, he came to win.”

Alvarez is now targeting a unification bout with IBF champion Caleb Plant.
