Arsenal are hopeful of sealing a deal with Juan Mata as early as this weekend, according to The Sun, with the winger telling his friends that he is moving to London after Valencia agreed a £19 million fee.

Mata netted eight goals for Valencia last season, but contributed 12 assists, making him a very valuable member of the Spanish side.

And as a result of Mata’s performances, Arsenal have been interested in the Spaniard for quite some time, and were said to be closing in on a deal.

Tottenham and Manchester City had also been linked to a possible move for Mata, but as Arsenal aim to spend big this summer and end a six-season long trophyless run, Mata is reportedly at the top of Wenger’s transfer wishlist, and the Gunner manager has said he will do whatever it takes to land the star.

Should Mata be bought by Arsenal for £19 million, the price will break the record at the club, set by Andrey Arshavin when he moved to the side for £12 million.

But with the sale of Gael Clichy, and Nicklas Bendtner looking set to leave this summer, if Cesc Fabregas makes an exit as well, Arsenal will easily have the money to cover the purchase of Mata.
