Long-term Manchester United and Arsenal target Steven Defour is on the verge of a move to Sporting Lisbon according to talkSPORT.

The 23-year-old defender was left out of the Standard Liege squad for their UEFA Champions League qualifier against FC Zurich, causing speculation to go into overdrive that he is on his way to Portugal.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has monitored Defour for quite some time, as far back as 2009 when he allegedly sent the player a personal letter after he suffered a broken foot to say that the club would continue to track his progress.

A move never materialised, and having recruited the services of Phil Jones this summer, Manchester United are affluent in their central defensive options ahead of the new campaign.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger on the otherhand is still keen to add defensive reinforcements to his Arsenal ranks, and has also been consistently linked with a move for Defour who would be regarded as a good Emirates Stadium acquisition.

Defour's agent Paul Stefani revealed last month that his client was in talks with a number of different clubs from across Europe, with reports suggesting that he could move to Russian-based Lokomotiv Moscow.

However, after the two clubs failed to reach agreement over a fee, its paved the way for Sporting to swoop for the much sought after Defour at the expense of both Arsenal and Manchester United.
